Health Problem Obese Child – Help Your Child


Obesity is considered to be an epidemic, and it is growing throughout the world. While obesity can lead to many health issues, it’s particularly bad for children since many overweight children will suffer from obesity throughout their lives.  It’s estimated that one in three kids are overweight.  As a parent, it’s vital that you understand the potential for long term  health problem obese child.  Even though it’s tough to make changes, it’s important and your child’s future depends on it.

There are many health issues that are associated with obesity, here is a rundown of some of the most common, and potentially deadly, diseases your child could face if they don’t get their weight under control:

1. Type II diabetes.  This form of diabetes can lead the body to produce insufficient amounts of insulin and can cause the cells of the body to ignore insulin which will starve the cells and keep them from absorbing enough energy.  Type II diabetes can also lead to kidney problems, heart, eye and other organ diseases.

2.  Hypertension (high blood pressure) Overweight people, especially kids, are particularly prone to having high blood pressure.  High blood pressure can lead to many very serious conditions such as stroke, heart attack, and cardiovascular disease.

3. High cholesterol.  Long term high cholesterol can lead to a buildup of plaque in arteries.  This buildup can greatly decrease the amount of blood flow that travels through the body to all the organs.  Without the oxygenated blood flowing freely the system can suffer from many very dangerous side effects.

4. Joint diseases.  Whenever someone carries around extra weight it will wear and tear on the joints.  The longer this extra weight is carried the more damage that is done to the joints.  If a child has extra weight most of their life, they are creating the potential for a great deal of pain in their back, legs, ankles and hips later in life.

5. Heart disease.  The symptoms of heart disease tend to show up much earlier in life if the person has a long history of obesity.  It’s not uncommon for these issues to show up before the child reaches the age of 30.

6. Psychological.  When a child is obese they often endure all types of taunts and mocking from their classmates.  This can have a significant, and long term, impact on their self image.  It can lead to anxiety and depression and it can make them socially awkward and uncomfortable which can cause them to miss many of the milestones in life, such as school dances, that many of us take for granted.

While this news is dire, the good news is that it is never too late to reverse the  health problem obese child.  Many of these issues can be totally corrected if the child simply makes (or their parents make) better lifestyle choices.  Something as simple as eating a more nutritious diet and getting more exercise can make a lot of difference in the weight of a child.  That’s not even taking into account the huge jump in their self esteem.

Obese Children – Your Child Needs Your Help

Today it’s estimated that one in three children will grow up to become obese, for this reason it’s vitally important that parents become proactive to deal with obese children to curb the disturbing, growing, trend that this generation could be the first to have shorter lifespans than their parents.

We all know that there are several factors that has contributed to such a dramatic increase in overweight children: busier lifestyles with less time to prepare food so more food is consumed from fast food, and less physical activity with so much time spent online or in front of a video game, etc.  While it’s easy to recognize the causes, it’s not always so easy to figure out a solution.

Here are a few things you can do to help your children lose weight, or just lead a healthier lifestyle so hopefully they never become overweight in the first place:

1. Lead by example.  Show your kids that you eat properly and get plenty of exercise.  Let them see that you enjoy these things, don’t make it look like a hassle. Encourage them to come with you on your walks.  After work or school instead of sitting around all night watching t.v., go for a swim, walk, bike ride, fly a kite, etc.  The point is that most of us don’t stray too far from the way we were raised so if you raise your kids to enjoy the right foods and to enjoy being outdoors and active, they are likely to take a lot of that outlook with them into adulthood, thus avoiding obesity in the first place.

2. If your child is already overweight there are a few things you can do to turn the tide.  For one thing, take them to the doctor for a complete checkup (your doctor can also offer some ideas on how to help them eat better).  Then work with them to lose weight, again just like in step one, spend time together doing various fun activities.  It’s very important that you don’t make this seem like work or a hassle.  Have fun with them and make sure to not lie to them about their weight (don’t tell them it’s ok to be fat because they have grandma’s hips) but don’t make them feel bad about themselves either.  Just handle it matter- of- factly and show them the changes they need to make when it comes to how, and how much, they eat as well as what they do for recreation.

When it comes to helping obese children learn better habits it’s all about focusing on making permanent changes to their, and your, outlook on food and exercise.  If you refrain from focusing solely on the weight loss and instead focus on living a healthier lifestyle your child will be less likely to feel bad about themselves and more likely to just enjoy the time they are spending with the family doing fun things.  Don’t focus on ‘weight loss’ just focus on eating properly and being active and your kids will focus less on their weight while learning great habits about food and exercise without even knowing they are learning!

Obesity in Adolescents

Obesity and overweight are the second most major reasons of preventable deaths in America. Stagnant lifestyle and junk food is to be blamed for more than three hundred thousand deaths per annum. The sad thing is that this problem is on the rise. Obesity is a chronic disease which poses serious health risk to the health of an individual. Also, obesity is the easiest recognizable medical problem, but is very difficult to deal with.

People usually confuse obesity with overweight. Overweight is gaining of a few extra pounds. A person is considered obese when the total body weight is minimum ten percent more than the recommended weight for his/her body structure and height. According to an estimate every year hundred billion dollars are spent on the obesity problem. It is very important to treat the problem as early as possible. Obese children between the age of ten and thirteen have eighty percent chances of growing into obese adults, unless they change their ways and adopt a healthier lifestyle. The obesity problem starts from the age of five and continue till adolescence.

Obesity can be caused due to complex reasons including biological, genetic, cultural and behavioral factors. Usually a person gets obese when he/she consumes more calories than the body burns. Also there are fifty percent chances of becoming obese when both one of the parent is obese and when obesity has affected both the parents, the chances increases to eighty percent. One percent of obese people can have that fat because of health reasons, as obesity can be caused due to few medical disorders. The causes of obesity in adolescence are overeating, family history, bad eating habits, little or no exercise, medical illness, low self esteem, medications, depression, emotional problems, stressful life, and family problem.

Obesity can cause many major problems. Some of them are diabetes, sleeping disorders, high blood pressure, breathing problems, emotional problems and increase in heart disease risk. Teenagers are more prone to get emotional problems. Because of the weight, they develop low self esteem. They get into depression, obsessive compulsion disorder and anxiety.

Adolescents who want to tackle the obesity problem should approach a pediatrician who will thoroughly evaluate the cause. If no physical disorder is to be blamed, the weight is reduced by limiting the calorie intake and increasing physical activity. The doctor can advice a weight management program and change the eating habits of the teenager, slowly. The patient must avoid oily, fatty, fast and junk food. The potions must be reduced in order to decrease the calorie intake. If the adolescent has developed emotional problems because of obesity, an adolescent psychiatrist can collaborate with the pediatrician in order to make a comprehensive plan for treatment. The plan includes reasonable goals, behavior modification, family participation, and management of physical activity.

Self motivation is extremely necessary in loosing weight. Because obesity is more a family problem and not an individual problem, the whole family can switch to eating healthy food and exercising regularly. This can make the weight control program a success. Parents can play a major role by boosting the self esteem of their children by concentrating on their strengths and encouraging them, instead of targeting the weight problem. The whole family should eat meals together, instead of eating individually while watching a movie. This helps all the members to focus on the food and the quantity being eaten. If the teenager isnt getting support from his family members, he/she can join support groups which can help towards the goals.

After the adolescent has lost weight, it is very important that he/she maintains it. In majority of the cases, people shift back to their old eating habits after loosing weight. That is the reason why obesity is more of a lifetime issue. So the main aim of any weight loss program must be make the adolescent like healthy food. He/she must also be made to exercise regularly, irrespective of the weight.
